Grand Iftar

In a heartwarming display of community spirit and cultural celebration, Woodkirk Academy hosted their third annual Grand Iftar event on Tuesday 25 March. The event brought together students, teachers, parents, and local community members to break their fast and share in the joyous occasion of Ramadan.

The evening began with a welcoming speech from the local Imam, Abu Bakr from Batley mosque, who emphasized the importance of unity and understanding among diverse cultures. "This iftar is not just about breaking our fast together it's about fostering a sense of belonging and mutual respect within our school community."

As the sun set, the call to prayer echoed through the school grounds, signalling the time to break the fast. Attendees enjoyed a variety of delicious traditional dishes, including dates, samosas, biryani, and sweets, all prepared by volunteers from the school community; Alishan's restaurant, Cinnamon Lounge restaurant, Morrisons, Brayside Bakes, Spiced Mango and Table 26. The atmosphere was filled with laughter, conversation, and a sense of togetherness.

Students from different backgrounds shared their experiences and the significance of Ramadan in their lives. One student remarked, "It's amazing to see everyone come together like this. It makes me feel proud of my culture and happy to share it with my friends."

Parents and community members expressed their gratitude for the school's efforts in organizing such a meaningful event. "It's wonderful to see our children learning about and respecting different cultures," one parent commented. "Events like this help build a stronger, more inclusive community."

The grand iftar event at Woodkirk Academy was a resounding success, leaving everyone with a sense of unity and appreciation for the diverse cultures that make up their community. It was a night to remember, filled with warmth, generosity, and the shared joy of Ramadan.

Woodkirk Academy’s school production this year is School of Rock The Musical and this week, cast members and the band were delighted to meet actor David Fynn who played the role of Dewey in the musical in the West End.

David spent time watching some of the numbers as the cast and band rehearsed and met with Sixth Form student Harry, Woodkirk’s own Dewey, to offer some last-minute tips.  Harry said “It was such a pleasure to work with David and we’re really grateful that he came to help.  He gave me some brilliant advice on how to develop my persona as Dewey and made some great suggestions that will improve our show as a whole.  It was a fantastic day and we’re really excited about Show Week.”

David said "Spending the day with the cast of School of Rock at Woodkirk Academy, I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek of the show and was absolutely blown away by what I saw.  I laughed and I cried and that was only the first five minutes!  It's an unbelievably talented cast, band and ensemble and the staff have done an incredible job putting it together.  Woodkirk also have a leading man in Harry that is going to give Jack Black a run for his money; Woodkirk shall teach rock TO THE WORLD!"
